Air India Flight Bound for UK Crashes Shortly After Takeoff
Ahmedabad – An Air India aircraft carrying 242 passengers crashed in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on the afternoon of Thursday, June 12, 2025. Following the incident, numerous people began sharing videos showing thick black smoke rising into the sky, allegedly from the crash site.
According to PTI, the plane went down in the Meghaninagar area near Ahmedabad Airport. Fire officer Jayesh Khadia told media outlets that fire trucks were rushed to the scene after the aircraft reportedly caught fire following the crash.
"A plane has crashed in the Meghaninagar area near the airport. The type of aircraft is yet to be identified," stated Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik.
Air India released an official statement saying:
“Flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, June 12, 2025. We are currently verifying the details and will provide updates as soon as possible.”
A firefighter told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that there was no further information available at the moment regarding the aircraft type or casualties.
“Thick black smoke could be seen above the airport,” reported an AFP journalist on site.
According to The Times of India, the aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner en route to London, which crashed shortly after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The plane reportedly fell in the Meghani area of the city, prompting an immediate emergency response.
